HYT Uganda Announces a New Partnership with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on Sustainable Sanitation in the Bidi Bidi Refugee Settlement

HYT Uganda launches a major project in Bidi Bidi refugee settlement, in partnership with, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

HYT is delighted to share news of an important new partnership with GIZ. HYT will build 500 latrines in vulnerable refugee households, using the innovative Interlocking Stabilised Soil Block (ISSB) technology, which not only ensures durability but also minimizes environmental impact. This climate-friendly approach will save up to 1,790 tons of CO2 emissions, equivalent to 1,142 tons of firewood.

But there’s more to this project than just building latrines. At the heart of HYT’s mission is the empowerment of local communities. To this end, HYT will train 50 young men and women in all aspects of construction. This training programme is not just about imparting skills; it’s about creating opportunities, fostering self-reliance, and building a skilled workforce that can drive community development.

Head of GIZ Programme, Ottilie Mooshofer, said, “The WatSSUP Programme is implemented by GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The programme aims to eradicate root causes of displacement, reintegrate refugees and strengthen host communities. This programme is operating on the nexus of humanitarian and development work and focuses on both refugee and host communities in Northern Uganda (Arua, Yumbe, Terego & Madi Okolo). It provides sustainable water and sanitation services in the selected communities.”
