HAILEYBURY YOUTH TRUST

WE TRAIN

WE TRAIN AS WE BUILD

HYT’s successful and unique vocational training model gives young people important new skills, as they build facilities for their community.

Starting with block-making and block-laying, trainees acquire practical skills in all aspects of construction. This in turn provides an income and further employment opportunities.

MORE THAN SIMPLY BUILDING

There is so much more to the training programme than just building.

Our trainees grow in confidence, developing leadership skills, teamwork and a sense of self-worth.

The empowerment of young women and men is especially important for some of the continent’s most vulnerable people.

FLEXIBLE LEARNING

The results of the flexible training programmes are impressive.

The ‘train as you build’ model not only gives schools and communities new facilities, many of our ‘graduates’ are employed as masons in their villages and settlements, building their own homes, or remain with HYT and work on other projects.

CISCO'S STORY

Until the arrival of HYT, Cisco Onesman, driven from his village in South Sudan by bitter civil war and the fear of death, had spent three years looking for work in the refugee settlement of Bidibidi in northern Uganda.

In May 2019, HYT offered Cisco a place on its training programme, in partnership with Mercy Corps and funded by DfID. This opportunity transformed Cisco’s life.
