Skills Training with Habitat for Humanity Uganda

On Wednesday last week, HYT hosted fourteen youths from Habitat for Humanity Uganda (HFHU), a non-profit organisation specialising in accessible and sustainable housing solutions.

HYT, now celebrating its 20th year of operation in Uganda, designed a day of hands-on construction training in our area of expertise: Interlocking Stabilised Soil Bricks (ISSBs).

The young men and women made their way to an HYT-built campus in the neighbouring district of Kamuli, on which stand 8 ISSB structures of varying size and shape. Many of the youths had never seen ISSBs structures of this size before!

Roy Bandu, Project Officer at Habitat for Humanity, reports ‘As HFHU team lead for the day, I was pleased to see the youth actively engaged by the HYT Team in practical sessions, moving outside classroom-based instructions to understand the materials selection and block production processes, and participating in the application of ISSBs in large-scale constructions.’

Roy further reflected with satisfaction that ‘this hands-on exposure will go a long way in strengthening the confidence, skills and ability of the youths to become ambassadors of sustainable housing.’

HYT is proud of its partnering role in inducting these aspiring builders into the world of ISSB, and was pleased to be able to carry out the training in a location which showcased some of the best that can be achieved with this climate-friendly technology.
