HYT Uganda, in partnership with GIZ is thrilled to announce the successful completion of 500 latrines for 500 households—an achievement that has dramatically improved hygiene and sanitation for vulnerable families, with a special focus on empowering women-led households.
Bidi Bidi, Africa’s largest refugee settlement, is home to 250,000 South Sudanese who fled the devastating civil war just across the border, carrying little more than basic possessions and an unyielding determination to build healthier, better lives for themselves and their families.
The sudden influx of 200,000 refugees in 2016 led to widespread deforestation as the community struggled to meet urgent construction and cooking needs. This rapid growth created a pressing humanitarian demand for sustainable solutions as the community struggled to meet basic humanitarian needs.
At HYT, our passion lies in empowering local communities. Through our integrated training programs and innovative approach to climate-friendly building with Interlocking Stabilised Soil Blocks (ISSB), we’re not just constructing structures; we’re building futures.

Life in the settlement is extremely challenging. Many residents lack basic pit latrines and are forced to relieve themselves in the open. With the help of local leaders, we identify those most in need of these essential facilities. Without proper sanitation and access to clean water, refugees like Moses face a constant struggle for survival. In such a densely populated environment, the absence of sanitary latrines allows waterborne diseases to spread quickly.
We had the opportunity to speak with Samson, a 35-year-old refugee trainee who worked on this project with GIZ and successfully completed his training in 2023 as part of HYT’s One Million Litres initiative.
“Before my training with HYT, each day was filled with uncertainty. Now, my life has been transformed. My family can depend on me, and my children are thriving in school.”
