From Village Youth to Senior Manager: Erisa’s HYT Journey

I was like a lost sheep until HYT came and saved me from where I was. Now I know where I am going.”

Nkuutu Erisa joined HYT in 2017 as one of five trainees. He knew little about construction, or the promising career that lay ahead of him. “I was a village boy when I saw an advert calling for youth to train in sustainable construction. I applied and my request was successful.”

In his 9 years of service to the organisation, Erisa has since been promoted to a Senior Construction Manager, and has passed on valuable skills training to over 50 youths.

HYT has changed my life. I was just a young boy digging in people’s gardens, but now my future is secured.

On his first day of training, Erisa recalls his friends walking by and laughing at the sight of him covered in mud, excavating soil for block production. But when asked what joining HYT had done for him, Erisa grinned, “It really changed my life. My friends that first laughed at me are still in our home village, and I have travelled the country. I have a career.”

“My best memory was the day they chose to put their trust in me by making me one of the management committee. I am so proud to be working with the people who make sure our organisation keeps growing.”

We are so proud to have Erisa on our team. He has worked incredibly hard on his career, and has helped to build a truly sustainable future for Uganda, delivering skills training and climate-friendly infrastructure.

“HYT is the best at ISSB and I am part of the best. It feels good to be the best.”
