“One day, soldiers told us to go to the county headquarters. Then we were led out of the forest. They said, ‘Wherever we send you now, you cannot come back” James Barangirana.

The Batwa Development Program (BDP) was founded in 2008 by Dr. Scott and Carol Kellermann to empower the Batwa people. After their eviction from the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in 1992, the Batwa became one of the world’s most impoverished communities.

HYT Uganda, partnered with The Kellermann Foundation, built an innovative ISSB two-classroom block using climate friendly, carbon saving materials, and trained six local community members.

BDP help the Batwa rise from poverty through sustainable improvements to their quality of life. Designed in close consultation with BDP, the structure honours and celebrates the Batwa people’s rich cultural heritage and often overlooked history.
